I have never read of this being mentioned on the usual web sites. I would think it would be pretty good, probably WAY better than i could ever appreciate.

...and $299 I can swing.

Gotta be a "gotcha" somewhere here!

I've known about them and wondered. Just did a search in the rec.audio.pro archives in the google groups area, and two very reliable sources (Mike Rivers and Scott Dorsey) say they suck. That's enough for me, but if you care for more detail, search away.

(R.A.P. is about useless to follow for your daily dose, very bad signal to noise, but the archive is over 10 years old, so there's some excellent depth there for searching.)

Here's the link to the EV RE1000 review at SOS: http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/1996_artic...83dd770c53415c9

In that price range I've found the Audio-Technica AT4040 to be pretty darn good.

Steven, thanks very much.

Yea. *IF* i go with a LD condenser, thats it. i know the nt1-a is supposed to be
great, but I really trust AT. Good rep and around when i was a pup.

That EV mic probably sucks -- otherwise it would be talked about here. smile.gif smile.gif

I remember talking to one of the most gifted designers in pro audio a year or so ago. And, we're talking about mics. He talked admiringly of Electro Voice and Audio-Technica. When we started talking about mics I thought he go into Microtech Gefell or Soundelux or Brauner or another "hot" name. But, he's talking EV and Audio-Technica. EV makes decent mics. For example, EV makes the EV RE20, RE16 and the 635a. These mics are classics in every sense of the word. But, every mic EV makes is not a classic.

These EV mics don't get talked about in most forums. I'm glad we talk about them here because they are good mics. And, they are more suitable for the home recording than most of the cheap condenser mics. Dynamics are going to pick up less ambient noise. You can do cool things with them that you wouldn't dare do with a condenser. One of my faves is to put a vocalist in the same room as a pair of monitors and hand him an SM58. Sometimes, you get a great performance that way.

A good friend of mine said that's a pretty cool mic. Now, I have a lot of mics around and don't need one but heck for $299 maybe you should try it?

Its very tempting. knowing EV it is going to be built like a tank. Course you could
get a at4040 for that.

I am a home recordist so as Paul White says in SOS: Most idiots like me will not even
begin to tax the sonic capabilites of even the cheap chinese condensers -

But i do know the diff between a sm57, re20, 421 and an octavia 219 so i am just fussy
enough (ok, way too much) . lol
