What do you guys think about this auction?:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...ssPageName=WDVW

I've been looking to getting one of these, and it seems like a pretty good deal, assuming I could find a tech around here to tune it up a bit...

that is an amazing buy it now price. see if you can get them on the phone and see how much they have tested it.

even with $300 or so of work done on it, you still would have a good deal if they are selling it at $275.

i would be tempted to BIN if i were you.

My belief is to just wait until you find one that is working. Buying stuff on the "come" can be rewarding or it can turn into a DOA piece of crap that never works.

Maybe someone like Harvey or Jetphase can chime in and give his opinion.

The ad is no longer available. However, I have owned 2 Otari MX5050s for about 15 years (4 and 8 tracks). As analog tape recorders they are superior to the Teacs in design and construction (I own a Teac A-3340S and A-3440).

But we are living in the digital recording age now. You probably have no idea how difficult and complicated it is to use these relics. They have to be regularly calibrated, cleaned, de-magnetized, and they need noise reduction, which also requires calibration, etc. ad nauseum.

My advice is to avoid analog tape recorders completely and stick with digital, unless you have analog tapes that require a tape player. I have thousands of reel-to-reel tape, so I have no choice. And check out the astronomical price of analog tape before buying a recorder. Who wants a horse and buggy?

You DO realize that ad was 4 years old, right? comp.gif

I love it when the old ads percolate to the top. coffee.gif

I just joined this site and this was the only area I could access. If there is a problem with the age of the topic, the administration should remove it.

However, the topic is really the MX5050, and presumably the thread is still relevant to those interested in Otari analog tape recorders. I have owned 2 for 15 years, which makes me an EXPERT on the topic, so I cannot comprehend why anyone would complain about me offering my opinion on the subject.

Relax...no one is complaining...just pointing out the obvious.

As administration, I appreciate your wanting to discuss these fine tools...how about we move the topic to a section not pretty much reserved as a buy/sell/trade place?

Good topics - just the wrong place.

You're asking me? I don't really care. You can delete my entries, move them, or whatever you wish. It seems the best thing would be to configure your site so old ads are deleted, or new responses cannot be added to old ads.

I have the equipment I wrote about, so I don't really care what you do about my written responses. I'm constantly writing, so it makes no difference to me.

wireline was just pointing out it is a old add, but a great topic.
