So I love Duke Ellington's "East St. Louis Toodle oo."
What makes its sound? From an engineering perspective do you think you could make those scratchy solo horn sounds with mic and preamp selection and effects etc. or is it up to the player. (any horn players have imput?)
I have been paying a lot of attention to how harmonicas sound in recordings and wonder how much of that sound is owed to the green bullet... maybe that narrow freq. response is the sort of thing im looking for.
If you think the Duke is boring or soemthing you can hear the same sort of sound that im talking about on "skanky panky" by Kid Koala.
yes.

I think most of it is the players http://www.redhotjazz.com/bubber.html

It's part production and part talent.

The Duke had great players. You'll likely not get to work with guys like that unless you go camp out at University of North Texas or some other big music school with a jazz program filled with lots of talented horn players.
