Are the A/D and D/A converters on the digi 002 decent? Will it be enough to just get a word clock, or am I going to need converters for each channel (If I want to record live rather than track by track)?

I've made decent recordings with the Digi 002. A word clock will likely improve things (or make them different). I've never put a word clock on a Digi 002 so I am speculating.

Decent.....is in the ear of the beholder.

Unfortunately I can´t try out different units. What would the ¨best¨ unit be according to the ears of the beholders who frequent this board?
I saw another thread going that is in the same vain but the buyer seems to have a slightly more limited budget. That is to say I was planning on spending 1600ish on a digi002 plus a lucid adapter/word clock so i can get some tracks in at high quality a/d when im tracking one by one, and run off the word clock when im recording multiple tracks at a time. My question boils down to this: Thats how much I can spend, like anyone else I would prefer to spend less if price vs. quality allows for it, but in the case that i spend that amount is this a wise purchase (taking false economy into account and all of that).

Why not get a used 003 or a used or new 003 Rack? If I wanted a Pro Tools set up then I'd go that route rather than patching a word clock to the 002.

FWIW, I used a Digi 003 last week.

Sounds better than the 002... A lot better.
Sounds better than any modded or clocked 002 I've encountered.
Sounds as good as the HD converters to my ear.

I'd say that depends on how demanding your ears are.

If you're not experienced you'll probably find 002's conversion sort of nice... until you hear something else.
To me neither the AD nor the DA on the 002 is decent at all.
They're ok for demos though.

Regarding Word Clock... the benefits are not a big deal at that level of quality.
I'd get a second converter for your setup - Lavry Black AD for example... at least you'd have two good channels going in... (and a matching DA later on).

It's all relative at the end of the day. Ken Lewis has recorded and mixed multi-platinum selling records on a "lowly" 002. Don't let it stop you from recording music or developing your chops, because [obviously] it's more than adequate.

There's people that claim the 002's sound better than the 003's, so go figure *shrug*

I won't be trading our RME or Apogee ADDA in anytime soon for one, but it's not terrible.

True, Baz...but as the camera sweeps by at 4:02 or so, one sees an HD192 interface and a pair of Apogee DA and AD 16s....I'm pretty sure those are not there just as eye candy... wink.gif

Perhaps the control surface and access of the 002 is good stuffing...but the only 002s I personally have heard were ...uh...well, never mind...

Just my 2 cents.
