Hi. Has anyone heard of or tried the Alice Mic Pak?? It has a very primitive look like the Rane MS-1b but has 75dB of gain!

I've heard of an Alice company in the UK that was started in the late 1960s that sold primarily to the broadcast market. I believe the current company is a different company that bought the Alice name.

I like the no frills look of the mic pre. All the broadcast pieces that I've tried out are better than the low end gear and sometimes ever bit as good as top end pro recording gear.

Hi. Thanks for the reply! Yeah it does look really interesting that the design is very simple. I'm intrigued to find out if it is simple because of better components inside like the Rane MS-1b? Here are the specs :-

Switchable 80Hz Filter: Switchable 48V Phantom power
Inputs impedance: >3k ohms balanced
Frequency response: 20Hz - 20kHz +0dB/-0.5dB
Common mode rejection: -100dB at 10kHz (max gain)
Equivalent input noise: -131.3db 150 ohm (30Hz - 30kHz)
Distortion (THD): 0.009% (1kHz)
Crosstalk: Better than -90dB at 1kHz
Max input level: -10dBu
Gain Range: 35dB to 75 dB
Output impedance: <1 ohm balanced and floating
Max output level: +26dBu

I have to admit I don't really know what all this means?
I already have an M-Audio DMP3 which I really like. I am really impressed with the clean uncolored sound and good quality Burr Brown INA 163 opamps.

What I would like to know is if this is going to be much better than the DMP3? I like the fact that the DMP3 has got Low Cut and DI's which the Alice doesn't.

Hi. What I'm confused about is why haven't I heard much about this pre? When I've been looking for a new clean pre-amp no-one mentioned it!?
I've heard lots about the DMP3 and Rane but nothing about the Alice!?
If it offers quality as good as the Rane MS-1b but 2 channels and with 75dB of gain for £194 you would think you'd hear about it everywhere!?
I'm guessing it isn't as good as the Rane else people would be raving on about it like the DAV!?
