Full Version: New Place to Work...
Mojo Pie > Talk and News > Recording

As some of you know...Wireline Studio is moving...(hooray/rats)

New facility was originally built in late 30s from what we can tell...cinder block walls filled with concrete and/or sand, each section on its own foundation...no noise issues with the neighbors (restaurant on one side, clothing store on the other....)

So cool...but the move is gonna be a mosnter pain....its taken what, 6 years, to get used to the current place? Gonna have to rent a couple of trucks and a bunch of labor just to move gobos and racks....

but hey....its GOTTA be done. Pics will be forthcoming and act as a journal....

Couple of updates...some good, some meh, some suckage...

- Finally got all utilities rolled over and on...not gonna use gas, as space heaters seem to work well, even in a 2000 sq ft facility.

- There are monster standing waves in one room....easily fixable with proper treatment, but an expense I didn't want at the moment

- My partner is really excited about the idea of working his electronica projects in a smaller room with access to the big spaces for certain ambiences...coolness

- It got up to 81 degrees here today....and its still cold in the new place....in the soon to be old place, the AC would have been on for hours....

- I can't slow down enough to focus on the move....tracking sessions tomorrow AM, gig tomorrow night, tracking a major project guitar lines on Sunday, and just picked up another indie gospel project to begin next month...

- Pan still hasn;t sent me the Mint Julips yet.

- Still up in the air about hard fast walls or well partitioned GOBOs and BBC separation walls for a flexible control room area....I am thinking the latter, with the option to bulld up some or all of a permantnent structure in the future....like one client said to me today "you just know when the mics are in the right place - why spend a fortune on walls to prove it? He many have a point...it will be an interesting experiment

- Most of the place is carpet (no pad) over polished concrete...we ordered enough tongue and groove 5/8" plywood to make one or more sections wooden flooring if desired....

I love flexibility.....but I also get option anxiety pretty fast....one way or the other its gonna be a blast

I think I might be taking a road trip pretty soon. Enjoy the adventure. The Spanish language market in our part of the world seems to be getting stronger everyday.

I'd forget getting crazy about walls for now.

1. you are ALWAYS welcomed here...and the Spansih market is getting stronger everywhere...if you give me enough lead time, you'll have a place to hang yer hat for a while as well...

2. I agree about walls....over rated

3. For my good friend Pan: bigdance.gif

Some updates, if iintererested ...

1. We are 95% moved, and have already bee working (like mad) for over a week.
2. We seem to have a rumor of a pyschokinetic energy presence, with evidence...locks on the outside of an upstairs bathroom door, writing and some very strange markings on the walls inside said room, etc...check out some pics at my site www.wirelinestudio.com
3. We now have a spinet piano (great sounding one as far as spinets go)... Anyone say "Rockabilly" or true Southern Gospel?
4. I've had a hard time deciding on the theme for the place...(most studios are really too boring and Euro-weenie for my tastes)... Yesterday that issue was solved: after building some more GOBOs we draped an Indian blanket over one...perfect...then not an hour later, one of my clients (actually a dear friend who also happens to be a client) brings me (get this!) a fully functional nearly antique saddle, reins and all... We now know the visial theme.
5. Since moving, we have picked up 3 new clients for various long term things, and got committments (with deposits) for 2 other label projects....

We have decided to wall up an area or two - the debate now this separated area be the control room or one (or both) of the bigger tracking areas...Either way, its fairly simple to do, and we have the strong backs already lined up...

Sorry for the delay Paul (how ya been?)

Move is 099.999% done....we've been working everyday in the new place anyway, inspite of the lack of certain acoustical control features set for future installation.

My back is still killing me from the heavy part fo the move, and we still have yet to find time to move some smaller bookcases (and their contents - sulkoff.gif ) , a couple of love seats, filing cabs, etc...

The 1st thought was to make the area a big open room ala bill bottrell's place, but that is proving itself very impractical in a hurry...so in the next few weeks we will be walling up at least areas for drums and installing windows on our existing voiceover areas to make them closer to iso booths. Crunching numbers has never been my forte, but I think I'd rather get the places where the sources are tracked RIGHT than expend money on a less than ideal control area....

Now, hand me the Tylenol, will ya?

Couple of shots...the big open pic is what the place looked like shortly before starting to move in some heavier gear (and yes, we had already tracked a couple of acoustic guitar things to a laptop...the saddle is a gift from one of my dear friends (who happens to do some excellent songwriting).... etc...

More pics to come - please note I don't have a digital camera or even a cell phone for these things...I use a disposable Walgreen's camera, and have the pics developed to disc...yea, I am a cheap SOB
