dose size matter, in your room?
while chatting with Wireline this morning bigdance.gif we briefly touched on this topic.
i like small monitors, and i like to mix at lower volumes, not to say i do not crank things up from time to time, as i do wink.gif but, i find in rooms that are less them perfect ( as if i will ever have the luxury ), smaller monitor translate better.
it all depends on room size and treatment, but, what do you like ( size wise and or brand but size is the topic ), and what size is you room? coffee.gif

I'm kind of old fashioned because I like everything to be big. However, we live in an era of miniaturization, and everything seems to be getting smaller and smaller. Many people think speakers are ugly. George Martin said one of the reasons Quad died in the 1970's was because mothers refused to allow more speakers in their living rooms.

Years ago in one of my electronics classes I stated that small speakers are inferior because the woofer needs to be large to reproduce low frequencies accurately. The instructor told me I was wrong, so what do I know?

For mixing music I use many pairs of speakers and compare them. "Auratone" 5C Supersound cube speakers are helpful for listening to what most consumers are going to hear. My room is about 30' by 30'. I always use headphones (usually Fostex T20s) to listen for problems that might not be audible otherwise. And I always listen to the mix on my home entertainment surround sound system, because I know it best. The loudness varies, and I never get ear fatigue because I take breaks--mostly because I get sick of hearing the same thing over and over and over again.

Ironically, since I dislike listening to my music, I hear most of it on my cheap computer speakers which don't seem to have any bass response. In my studio I always strive for the highest quality possible in everything I create. Then to upload anything to the internet I am forced to convert it to the lowest possible quality. Sometimes I have to stop myself from considering how a mix will sound as an MP3 on the internet.

small monitors ( IMO ), work best in smaller rooms at lower volumes.

I like mixing out medium volumes on small monitors. I like the idea of mid fields and far fields. I just don't use them even when I got them. I've found that recording artists just don't get near fields so if I owned a commercial facility I'd get something with some club atmosphere and put the clients on a sofa at the back of the control room.
