Full Version: Mixes Still Not Translating Well...Try a Different Amp

This is kind of a hit or miss thing, since so many people now are using active monitors...but for those of us still using passives (IE, good ones phones.gif ) and you are still having trouble getting your mixes to set well or translate to other mediums, try replacing your amp....seriously.

For a long time I had used a Samson 60W a side single rack space...sucked, but it was all I had. For some reason, I swapped it out with a Yamaha audiophile amp from the mid 80s or so, and the difference was remarkable...

Then the other day I installed a Crown DC300A...LORD HAVE MERCY! All of a sudden, my Tannoy Reveals sound huge, with much deeper bass response than they have ever had before, punchier mids, and crisper, cleaner highs....the custom made monitors made for me by OnTrack Audio are in for upgrade...cannot WAIT to hear what these things will sound like with a killer power amp

The Crown DC300A is a 4 rack space monster (not very deep) will a monster transformer and 2 of the largest capacitors known to exist to mankind...the amp weighs as much as a Fender HotRod Deluxe....

Seriously....I knew that amps made a difference, but I did not know to what extent until now...I paid $300 for this one, and it came with the original sales slip, manual, and factory spec sheet for this specific unit....

Cannot recommend enough what quality power amps will do for your sound....now, to find me a pair of JBL 4311s

i have several amps and it always amazes me just how different my monitors sound with different amps.
i had a friend give me some JBL 4206 ( several years back now ), he felt they sound thin, and just not up to snuff.
i hooked up some ( funny ), YAMAHA amps and i kinda liked them, so i kept them, and still use them: )~
i tried them with some Mcintosh amps and was blown away, but the Mc's have to stay on my Klipsch kg2's: )~
now i am always on the look-out for better amps and crossovers!
and speakers: )~ bigdance.gif bigdance.gif bigdance.gif

Interestingly I was discussing my latest amp acquisition with an associate the other day...he mentioned he had some very bad experiences with Crown DC amps, as they tended to blow up lesser powered speakers.

Of course, I asked him if he placed an in-line fuse on the positive cable AS INSTRUCTED TO DO SO IN THE MANUAL...of course the answer was no....

Funny thing about instructions... comp.gif

i have never had any issues in blowing speakers, even if the amp is rated well over the speakers power rating..
typically ( as i have been told ), it is the amplified distortion that causes the speaker to blow.
the square waves are amplified, and the speaker cannot reproduce the wave, it inevitably causes damage.
now, i have seen example of grossly over powered speakers go as a result of a open in the voice coil, to much power and just fried the voice coil wire.

I have not blown up any speakers in the studio, but have had a crossover go bad taking out a woofer...

You gotta remember, one of my 1st REAL bass amps was an Acoustic 371 (ca. 1972)...just for kicks, I took the speaker out of a broken transistor radio and attached it to the speaker out of the Acoustic, hit the open E on a bass, and watched (and laughed) at the paper and bits of magnet flying all over the room...

Hey...I was 15. thumbsup.gif I Didn't vecome a responsible adult until recently....

I'm not a huge fan of active monitors. I have some cheap Yorkville YSM-1 passives. These are the older ones with the simulated wood cabinet. biggrin.gif

I have a made in the orient Hafler power amp on them.

No offense to anyone but to me these totally provide a better translatable mix than the popular KRK or Mackie actives.

I've bought other things but nothing has stuck with me the way my Yorkies and the Hafler. I've thought about getting a better quality Hafler in just for the fun of it. My buddy Warren (yeah the guy from Front End Audio) said he could not believe that I liked such cheap monitors. However, he'd only heard the active current plastic cabinet YSM-1.
