Full Version: DIY project--Racks without carpentry!

I'm going to be doing the project posted by a clever person here. As seen in the pics, it can be a table-top rack, but it can also go on the floor--the Ikea Rast is designed as a bedside table. It happens to fit 6U rack rails, although it is a little shallow--only 11 3/4" deep. Still, the cost and ease of build are ridiculous, and this is a project anyone who can use an Allen wrench and a screwdriver can complete, so it's worth doing.

For the rack rails, the fleabay store linked to the original project page is about the best price I can find. Since it's bare wood, I will also be finishing mine. I've got shellaced pine shelves in my studio room, so I'll be doing the same to the racks. Shellac is easy to apply and easy to repair. The single real weakness to it is that alcohol melts it. So I'm going to have to be careful when cleaning tape heads and the like. You're on your own if your finishing it differently.

Progress will follow. I need to order rails, though, so in a bit.

All right then...

I ordered two of em...one set of rails...one as a case for my newly scored mint DC300A amp, the others yet to be determined.....

If this doesn't work out, I still needed some new bedroom furniture.

Kinda like being on a blind date - if it doesn't work out, you can still play with the dog.

Very, very cool.

BTW, I'm getting leakage from the recording studio next door. They are recording "Moving On Up." Oh my God!!!

Got the rails from the eBay store, along with some bulk rack screws. Assembled a couple of the Rast endtables. Some initial thoughts:

The rails are about an exact fit to my first endtable--very snug. Recommend that you do any finishing after installing the rails. (Shellac, my intended finishing product, will melt in later if I decide to remove the rails and touch up the unfinished strip underneath. Had an easier time getting the rails in by tilting them into place rather than sliding them in in alignment from the front.

And while the vendor shipped promptly and well packed, I didn't factor in that there were not mounting screws for the rails. Off to Lowes for wood screws.

I did fit in a rack unit to confirm that it all fits and works--seems like a go.

[Ah-hah--I think I figured out a good thumbnail image size.]

Not able to view your pics.

Sounds like it worked out for you.

Hmm. Were you logged in? I couldn't view them at work, but the interweb usage policy prevents me from logging in. Saw them when I got home, logged out and couldn't see them, and then logged back in and they're back.

Hmm.

Attention lurkers: sign up as members to see Catherine Zeta Jone's rack on top of my rack.

Well, no, but sign up anyway.

I am logged in, yet it says I don't have permission...Hmmmm.

Dang it. Last thing I can think of is whether you have your control panel options set to view images and smilees/graemlins. If that isn't it, I'm going to need to find an image hosting site.

Pan, found any Ikea furniture that's a good fit for 500 modules?

Hmm. Maybe it's the second leap year for approval. Registered in '03.

I'll check my settings again, couldn't see anything though.
