I'm going to be doing the project posted by a clever person here. As seen in the pics, it can be a table-top rack, but it can also go on the floor--the Ikea Rast is designed as a bedside table. It happens to fit 6U rack rails, although it is a little shallow--only 11 3/4" deep. Still, the cost and ease of build are ridiculous, and this is a project anyone who can use an Allen wrench and a screwdriver can complete, so it's worth doing.
For the rack rails, the fleabay store linked to the original project page is about the best price I can find. Since it's bare wood, I will also be finishing mine. I've got shellaced pine shelves in my studio room, so I'll be doing the same to the racks. Shellac is easy to apply and easy to repair. The single real weakness to it is that alcohol melts it. So I'm going to have to be careful when cleaning tape heads and the like. You're on your own if your finishing it differently.
Progress will follow. I need to order rails, though, so in a bit.
