I am not a newbie to recording per se having been recording stereo for 30+ years. I want to record live 5 channel surround (primarily pipe organs) and burn to DVDs.
What interface is available for the "home enthusiast" to record live (to a laptop, I assume) to accomplish this?
I use Adobe Audition for most mastering now and I know it says it will handle 5.1, but how do I get the finished product to DVD?
This is truly a hobby and I do not intend to distribute the finished product beyond the performers involved, so "professional" quality with its commensurate price is not really what I am looking for. Any advice will be very appreciated.

I think what you probably need is an ambisonic microphone set up. There are some guides on the web for DIY on these. I think there's also some freeware software to encode. I think if you'd go to Google and type DIY and ambisonic and microphone that you'd probably get some good reading.

I know that Soundfield and Holophone make commercial products meant for surround sound. I do not know how much the Holophone cost but the Soundfield gear is very $$. In defense of Soundfield, though, I like what they make even though if it is out of budget for me.

Thanks. I have the microphones; I don't scrimp there. I will check out the Holophone and Soundfield.

OK, I just visited Holophone and Soundfield.

As I stated above, I have the five microphones I need for 5 discreet channels of simultaneous recording. What I need is a way to get those 5 channels live into a laptop and then a way to burn a 5.1 DVD audio track.

If you've got a reasonable budget and firewire, then I'd recommend the Yamaha MLA8, which is an eight channel preamp, and I'd recommend getting the Echo Audio Fire 8 or Audio Fire 12. Please note that your laptop must have a firewire interface for this to work. Otherwise, you'll need to go with a USB option or a laptop cardbus set up.

If you need something lower cost, then I recommend calling Warren Dent and Front End Audio and seeing what falls within your budget. Warren is fairly reasonable on these issues.
