Hi. I have an SPL Goldmike 9844 and am looking for a transparent uncoloured pre to compliment it. I also have a Soundcraft M8 and Studioprojects VTB1 which I'm using for cleaner sounds but have heard great things about the Rane MS-1b and DMP3. Would either of these pres be a step up from the Soundcraft M8 and VTB1 for my $200 budget or would I be better off using what I've got?

I've looked at several pres in the under $200 range. I think the VTB1 to be one of the better ones. I don't think you'd see a significant enough upgrade from either of the ones you mention to get that satisified feeling for $200. On the other hand, you might be OK spending $80 or less on a used Rane MS 1, MS 1a or MS 1b.
