Had to bail when Geraldo came on...
I was listening to NPR today and they were talking about the situation in NO. It seemed like everybody is blaming Bush & the federal government on the situation. I'm baffled! What about the local and state governments? Don't they have resources on the ground at the location? Wouldn't we expect the federal government to take several days to react?
In PA the gov. just successfully sued to keep a military base open because the national guard is a state resource. So, how can we have it both ways? It's a state resource but the fed's are to blame if they don't arrive quickly.
Clue me, please...

I know from living here in tornadoland that the feds generally want the city/county/state government to deal with a disaster for about 48 hours in part to assess what services the feds can bring in.
In this situation the Army Corps of Engineers knew of the seriousness of the problem as they control the levee system around New Orleans as they have for over 100 years. Anyone watching TV could see there's a problem and could see the local and state governments were not equipped to cope. No state or local government in this country is equipped for a disaster of this magnitude.
BTW, I actually liked the Geraldo deal. Geraldo used to be a great reporter. He was a superstar. That was a long time ago. He's not been anyone worthwhile for about 20 years. Yet, when he grabbed that baby, he nailed the problem in New Orleans better than anyone to date.
